AstraZeneca’s blockbuster cholesterol drug Crestor has faced generic competition from some of the biggest drugmakers in recent years.
Pfizer Inc. has already faced one of the biggest generic competition by rival Merck & Co. since its patent for Lipitor (generic for

arrested the company from selling Lipitor and other statins, which were the most widely prescribed drugs in the world.
But AstraZeneca’s patent for Crestor, the world’s best-selling cholesterol drug, expired earlier this month.
Pfizer’s patent on Lipitor expired a few months ago, meaning it no longer has to pay a premium to the original manufacturer’s price.
The expiration of Crestor was a key part of an overall battle between drugmakers and the market for Lipitor that resulted in a patent infringement lawsuit brought by Merck & Co. and the U. S. Food & Drug Administration.
Pfizer filed a patent application in 2012 against Merck, claiming the drug failed to comply with the law and that the drug’s patents were invalid.
It was the first time a generic company had been able to challenge a patent, and the case is the largest in the drug industry since its patent expired in 1998.
